Wheat is Special-And Where You'll Find It
As I've said in other places in this site:
Wheat (and all the bazillion things we put it in) is addictive. We don't "love bread" we're addicted to bread - and buns, muffins, bagels, french toast, pancakes, cookies, pastries, cereals, and the thousands of packaged foods that contain bread because it's addictive and companies know that putting wheat proteins in their products mean we get happy (getting both our wheat and carb fixes) and will want to buy their products more. Some places you'll find wheat: Baking powder Beer Bulgur Bran Bread, muffins, bagels, etc Bread crumbs Broth (canned or cubed) Cereals Couscous Cracked wheat Cream of wheat Durum or durum flour Einkorn Falafel Farina Gelatinized starch, modified starch, modified food starch Gluten Graham flour Granola and granola bars High gluten/protein flour Hydrolyzed plant protein (HPP) Hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) Kamut Lunch meats, hot dogs, sausages, breadings on meats and fish Pie fillings Puddings Prepared ketchups and mustards "Natural Seasoning" in spice mixes, packaged foods, etc Seitan Semolina Spelt (dinkel, farro) "Thickener" in coffee substitutes, instant cocoa, hot chocolate mixes, gravey mixes, ice cream, salad dressings, sauces, etc Triticale (a cross between wheat and rye) Triticum aestivum (another name for bread wheat) Vegetable gum Vegetable starch Vegetable meat subsitutes Wheat bran/berries/flour/germ/starch Whole wheat, white, all purpose, pastry, etc flour |
Some words used by clever companies to disguise the wheat they use:
